August is the month that our gardens are languishing in the heat of the last summertime month. Since everything appears to be finishing up for the growing season, do not neglect your garden and landscape during August just. August is the prime-time television of year to root prune, divide and transplant shrubs and flowers and get them all set for next spring.

August is the month to root prune any woody shrubs or evergreens that you have. Hydrangeas, azaleas and Holly shrubs that have overgrown their environment or that you wish to form new plants from must be root pruned and transplanted during the month of August.

Collect seeds or take cuttings from your favorite annual flowers during August to dry and conserve for planting in next year's flower beds or for an indoor container garden this winter season.

Some yearly bed linen plants root very quickly in containers and can be enjoyed throughout the winter season- coleus, wax begonias, fuchsia, impatiens and geraniums- will grow extremely well from a cutting. Take some healthy cutting from these yearly flowers and root in a glass of water or plant the cutting straight into a container of prepared soil and grow inside your home in a sunny location throughout the winter season. You'll have blooming appeal inside this winter and healthy bedding plants prepared to be planted in the garden next spring.

Seeds from your favorite yearly flowers can be grown inside your home in containers this winter. August is the month to plant seeds from marigolds, snap dragons, impatiens and calendars in containers for healthy bed linen plants next spring.

Seeds from hybrid annual flowers are not great to conserve or plant in containers for the winter season. Whatever seedling grows and germinates from hybrid flower seeds won't be like the parent plant. Deadhead all your hybrid annual flowers in August and dispose of the seeds.

Perennial flowers need to be separated and transplanted throughout August. When dividing and transplanting, dig down deep enough under the seasonal flower to keep some of the soil undamaged around the roots. Water in your new transplanted seasonal flowers well and mulch them for winter defense. Try not to interrupt the soil around flowers and shrubs that you are not digging up for transplanting so the surface area roots won't be harmed.

August is the month to plant Chrysanthemums for fall blooming. Pick Chrysanthemum plants that are just beginning to bud, not those that are currently in blossom, so they will have a longer flowering duration in your garden.

If you prepare to mail order any spring flower bulbs or roots, August is the time to get your order in for peony roots and spring flower bulbs so they will show up in time to be planted prior to the first frost.

There are numerous August gardening tasks to be done in preparation for next year's growing season.

Do not disregard your garden and landscape throughout August just since whatever appears to be completing up for the growing season. August is the prime time of year to root prune, divide and transplant flowers and shrubs and get them all set for next spring.
